Riyad-us-Saliheen — "Gardens of the Righteous," sometimes transliterated Riaz-us-Saliheen or Riaz ul Saliheen — is one of the most widely read hadith collections in the Muslim world. It was compiled in the 13th century by Imam An-Nawawi, who selected roughly 1,900 authentic hadith from Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and the other major hadith collections, and arranged them by subject rather than by chain of narration. This is Darussalam's English 2-volume edition: Arabic text with English translation and explanatory commentary.

Who was Imam An-Nawawi

Yahya ibn Sharaf An-Nawawi (631–676 AH / 1233–1277 CE) was a Syrian scholar of the Shafi'i school who, despite dying at 45, produced some of the most enduring reference works in Islamic scholarship. Besides Riyad-us-Saliheen, he's known for his 40 Hadith collection and his multi-volume commentary on Sahih Muslim. His reputation as a hadith scholar is part of why this particular compilation has stayed in continuous use for over 700 years.

What makes this compilation different

Bukhari and Muslim organize hadith partly around legal chapters and partly around the chain of transmission. An-Nawawi built Riyad-us-Saliheen around everyday practice instead — belief, worship, manners, family life, repentance, patience, and the character traits a Muslim is expected to cultivate. That's why it's commonly used as a standalone study text on its own, rather than only as a reference to look things up in: 372 chapters grouped into broader thematic sections, each opening with relevant Quranic verses before the hadith that follow.

This edition

Darussalam's English translation is by Dr. Muhammad Amin and Abu Usamah Al-Arabi bin Razduq, with explanatory notes drawn from Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf's widely used Urdu commentary on the text. Each hadith appears in Arabic with the English translation beside it, followed by brief notes explaining context or application where needed — closer to a study edition than a plain translation.

Who this is for

Anyone building a home or mosque hadith reference library, students working through a structured hadith curriculum, and readers who want a single book covering everyday Islamic conduct rather than a purely legal or academic hadith text. It's dense enough to study a chapter at a time over months rather than read cover to cover in one sitting.

If you want An-Nawawi's shorter, better-known work instead, An-Nawawi's 40 Hadith (Pocket Size) is a much smaller starting point. For a condensed Urdu edition of Riyad-us-Saliheen itself, see Mukhtaser Riyad-us-Saliheen (Urdu).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Riyad-us-Saliheen the same book as Riaz ul Saliheen?

Yes — Riyad-us-Saliheen, Riyadh us Saliheen, and Riaz ul Saliheen are all transliterations of the same Arabic title, رياض الصالحين. This is that book, in Darussalam's English 2-volume edition.

How many hadith are in this set?

Roughly 1,900 hadith across 372 chapters, drawn from Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and other major hadith collections.

Does this edition include the Arabic text?

Yes — Arabic text alongside the English translation, with explanatory notes under each hadith.

Is this suitable for a beginner, or only advanced students?

Both. The thematic arrangement and plain-language commentary make it accessible to a general reader, while the scope and depth make it a long-term reference for students of knowledge too.

How long does delivery take?

Most orders arrive in 3–5 working days anywhere in Pakistan, with same-day dispatch from Lahore for orders placed before 1 PM.
